Company History

One beautiful day in 1945 while muskellunge fishing on Chautauqua Lake near Jamestown, NY, Axel Dawson and his son George began talks on how the forming of an industrial and architectural metal fabrication business could take place. Exactly one year later, Axel and George began seeing their plans materialize when Dawson Metal Co., Inc. and Dawson Doors opened for business.

Dawson Metal Company, Inc./Dawson Doors (d.b.a.) was first established in 1946 at 201 E. 1st Street, Jamestown. In 1954 operations moved to a larger complex to accommodate increased demand for Dawson quality products. With yet continual growth, Axel and George began talks for an eventual expansion into a new, one-floor, 51,000-sq.-ft. plant at 825 Allen Street, which is the current Jamestown address.

In 1966, with the original founders becoming seniors, the company needed a fresh outlook on the ever-changing sheet metal industry. George asked his son, John to offer his skills to the family business. John's brother, David Dawson, current President and CEO joined the family business in 1980. Since that point, the company has grown to a 180,000-sq.-ft facility with 150 talented professionals serving a broad spectrum of industrial and architectural customers worldwide.

  • 150 talented Professionals who achieved ISO 9001-2000 in 1998.
  • 55% of business services an industrial base of customers from IBM, Kodak, United Technologies, Hughes Network Systems, Overhead Door Corporation, Universal Instruments and many more.
  • 45% of business serves the construction industry with high quality stainless steel and bronze entrance systems.
  • Complete CAD and EDI capabilities with a dedicated staff of engineers.
  • Equipment includes two turret presses, the largest 4000-watt industrial laser in the North Eastern U.S., and twelve press brakes with a maximum 400-ton capacity.
  • Specialties include short run fabrication in all different materials, long run fabrication and enclosures, prototype and design, paint and final assembly.
